The cast list for “A Journey to Africa” has sparked outrage. The collaboration behind it could be what Ghana’s film industry actually needs.

Lil Win’s new film has ignited a fierce debate over why Nigerian actors dominate the cast while many Ghanaian performers are sidelined. But beyond the social-media noise lies a more important question: what if this Nollywood–Ghana collaboration is exactly what the local industry needs to grow?

The film brings together Ghanaian and Nigerian talent in a single production, creating a platform for knowledge transfer, higher production standards and cross-border market access. If approached strategically, partnerships like this could help Ghanaian actors, crew and producers level up their craft, expand their audiences and build a more competitive entertainment sector.

“A Journey to Africa” features a heavy Nollywood presence, including Destiny Etiko, Kanayo and other well-known Nigerian actors, alongside Lil Win and a smaller contingent of Ghanaian talent.

When asked why he favoured Nigerian actors, Lil Win said he faced challenges with Ghanaian performers showing up on time, delivering consistent performances and committing fully to production schedules. He argued that Nollywood actors brought a level of professionalism that made the shoot smoother and the final product stronger.

That explanation drew backlash. But it also highlighted a gap that collaboration can address: if Ghanaian actors and crew work directly with seasoned Nollywood professionals on high-profile projects, they can learn the discipline, work ethic and technical standards that make Nigerian productions more competitive globally.

Nollywood’s rise is not accidental. It is built on a culture of treating filmmaking as a serious business, with actors showing up on time, respecting directors and delivering consistent performances under tight schedules.

By working alongside Nigerian stars on a project like “A Journey to Africa,” Ghanaian actors gain exposure to professional discipline, performance techniques and brand-building strategies that can make them more employable, more reliable and more competitive in regional and international productions.

The benefits extend beyond actors. Ghanaian crew members, camera operators, sound technicians, editors, costume designers and production managers get to work alongside Nigerian counterparts who operate in a more industrialised film ecosystem.

On-set collaboration allows for technical knowledge transfer, process improvements and quality benchmarks that can raise the standard of Ghanaian productions without waiting for government intervention.

One of Nollywood’s biggest advantages is its distribution network. Nigerian films reach audiences across Africa, Europe and the diaspora through established channels that Ghanaian productions often struggle to access.

A collaboration like “A Journey to Africa” opens doors to shared distribution, audience expansion and revenue diversification. Over time, repeated collaborations can help Ghanaian producers build their own distribution pipelines, using Nollywood partnerships as a stepping stone rather than a crutch.

Lil Win’s comments about Ghanaian actors not being ready to work with him at the level he wants remain controversial. But they also point to a real challenge: if Ghanaian performers want to be first-choice casting for major productions, they must match the professionalism that producers demand.

Collaboration offers a path forward through on-the-job training, mentorship opportunities and performance benchmarks that can shift the narrative from “Ghanaian actors are not ready” to “Ghanaian actors are in demand because they are professional and reliable.”

“A Journey to Africa” has exposed a raw nerve in Ghana’s entertainment landscape. But the real story is not about who was cast. It is about what Ghana can learn from working with Nollywood professionals and how that knowledge can lift the entire industry.

The film itself may succeed or fail at the box office. But its real impact will be measured by whether it pushes Ghana to treat its movie industry as a serious economic and cultural asset, built on collaboration, discipline and long-term investment.
